HNC Calls on EU to Impose Sanctions on Russia Over Campaign in Syria
MOSCOW (Sputnik) The UN General Assembly (UNGA) and the League of Arab States should get involved in the ongoing Syrian conflict in order to protect country's sovereignty, a spokesman of the Riyadh-formed opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) said Monday.

"We are calling on the Arab League to step in immediately to protect Syria's sovereignty through implementation of an agreement on a joint defense of the Arab countries," Salem Meslet said at a press conference, as quoted by the Al Jazeera broadcaster.

He added that the UNGA should also take measures in regard to the situation in the crisis-torn country, because the UN Security Council (UNSC) showed "inability to protect international security."

The official also urged the countries the HNC considered as friendly nations to protect Syria's unity and independence, labeling the activities of the Iranian and Russian servicemen in Syria as "occupation."

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with opposition factions and Islamist terrorist groups fighting the Syrian troops loyal to government of President Bashar Assad, who is supported by both Russia and Iran.

On Saturday, Russia blocked the French draft UNSC resolution on the cessation of hostilities in Syria's northern city of Aleppo. The document received 11 votes in support, two votes against (Russia and Venezuela), while two more members of the Security Council abstained (China and Angola). Thus, Russia, which is one of the five permanent UNSC members, used its right for veto.
