Last Round of Voting for New UN Chief ‘Remarkably Uncontentious’ - US Ambassador

The last round of voting at the UN Security Council to select the next Secretary-General of the United Nations was not controversial as Antonio Guterres of Portugal proved to be the most versatile and experienced candidate, US Envoy to the UN Samantha Power said on Wednesday.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Power also noted that the vote "speaks to the fact that each of us represent our nation, and each of us know how fundamentally important this position is in terms of the welfare of our own citizens."

"So, in the end, there was just a candidate whose experience, vision and versatility across a range of areas proved compelling and it was remarkably uncontentious, uncontroversial," Power stated.

The UN Security Council will hold a formal vote on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. after which it will officially present its selected candidate to the UN General Assembly.
