European partners have expressed concerns to the United States about US legislation that would allow victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to sue Saudi Arabia, US Department of State spokesperson John Kirby said in a briefing on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, US Congress overrode President Barack Obama's veto of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA), which allows families of the September 11 victims to pursue lawsuits against Saudi Arabia for allegedly supporting the terrorist attacks.

"Some of our European friends… have expressed concerns about the issue of sovereign immunity," Kirby told reporters.

Secretary of State John Kerry, Kirby noted, is also disappointed by US lawmakers deciding to reject Obama’s veto.

The Obama administration opposed JASTA arguing it could harm US relationships abroad and make Americans vulnerable to foreign lawsuits.
