On July 29, as the Olympic torch was being carried through the streets of Angta dos Reis, a city near Rio de Janeiro, a group of protesters stole the flaming torch and extinguishing it. The following is a list of similar mishaps that have happened to the Olympic symbol during the run-up to the Games of the past few decades.

    2012 Summer Olympics in London

During the Olympic torch relay the flame was being carried by members of the UK rafting team. Splashes of water and a strong head wind put the flame out and the team had to come ashore and wait for the arrival of special capsules with the Greek fire inside.

    2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi

The Olympic torch was being carried by USSR scuba diving champion Shavarsh Karapetyan, famous for having saved dozens of people during accidents. When the flame suddenly went out, Shavarsh, unfazed by the mishap, asked a local security guard to rekindle the flames with his lighter.

During the walkup to the first Olympics of the new millennium a group of protesters attempted to put out the Olympic torch with the help of the best thing they could apparently think of — a fire extinguisher!

    1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal

This time around it looks like Mother Nature herself rebelled against world’s premier sporting event.
During the ceremony to light the Olympic cauldron the skies over Montreal opened up with the driving rain quickly putting out the Olympic flame.

    1988 Summer Games in Seoul

A total of 2,400 white pigeons set free to soar over the stadium chose what they apparently thought was the best seat in the house – the rim of the Olympic flame cauldron.

Moments later most of them were roasted when the fire ignited.
