The Japanese authorities have started to analyze the statements and actions of US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to plan for potential scenarios should he win the upcoming election, local media reported Thursday.

TOKYO (Sputnik) — A Trump presidency is expected to focus on domestic affairs rather than on international issues, the newspaper reported, citing a high-ranking Japanese government official.

According to the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, the government intends to pay special attention to Trump's critical statements in regard to the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement and about the review of the 1960 Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the two nations.

According to Trump, the United States is running up an enormous trade deficit with Japan, while also defending it militarily but getting nothing in return because, under the terms of the current bilateral defense treaty, Tokyo is under no obligation to come to Washington's aid.

The presidential nominee has repeatedly criticized TPP, which intends to deregulate trade among the 12 signatories, including both Washington and Tokyo. Trump has also called for rejecting the free trade deal, as it could negatively affect jobs in the United States.
