Russia regrets the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s latest rejection of 68 Russian athletes’ appeal against the international federation’s ban from Rio Olympics, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled against Russian athletes in their appeal against international athletics' ban from international competitions.

"Yes, the news is not very good. We have to analyze the situation in view of the decision," Peskov told reporters minutes after CAS issued its ruling in the Russian Olympic Committee’s (ROC) appeal.

"One can definitely express regret with this decision, which applies to all of our track and field athletes, because collective responsibility is unlikely to be acceptable in our view. We are talking about athletes preparing for the Olympics who had nothing to do with doping, no relation to the allegations or suspicions, whose doping samples were tested by foreign anti-doping organizations," the spokesman stressed.

Lausanne-based CAS heard ROC's claim against the IAAF ban on Tuesday in Geneva. Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva represented Russian athletes in the case, alongside British lawyer Mike Morgan, ARAF President Dmitry Shliakhtin and Secretary General Mikhail Butov, as well as ROC head of legal department Alexander Brilliantov.

The International Olympic Committee said it would explore legal options ahead of deciding whether to ban the Russian national team from the Summer Olympics in Rio next month. An IOC spokeswoman suggested the decision would be forthcoming within a week, while several reports indicated the decision could be made this weekend.
