    US Defense Secretary Arrives in Baghdad

    US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter arrived in Baghdad on Monday on a surprise visit, the Department of Defense said.

    MOSCOW, July 11 (Sputnik) — US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter arrived in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Monday on a surprise visit, the Department of Defense said.

    "SecDef greeted in Baghdad by Ambassador to Iraq Stuart Jones and LTG Sean MacFarland," the DoD tweeted in a post alongside a video showing the defense chief emerging from his plane at the Baghdad airfield.

    He was greeted on the tarmac by US Ambassador to Iraq Stuart Jones and Sean MacFarland, the commander of the US-led coalition fighting Daesh in Iraq and Syria.
