Australia Reelects Ruling Coalition Gov’t

Australia’s ruling coalition is set to win the parliamentary election with its leader Turnbull Malcolm being re-elected as the prime minister, election results with 79.6 percent of votes counted suggest.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The coalition has so far gained 42 percent of public support, while its closest rival – the Labor Party – has gained just 35 percent of the votes. The Greens party appears to be in the third place, having secured some 9.8 percent of votes.

None of the other parties have gained over 2 percent of votes.

Labor leader Bill Shorten conceded defeat in the election, declaring that “it is clear that Malcolm Turnbull will form a government.”

"I believe that the government has won the election absolutely," Shorten said, as broadcast by the Australian television.

A party needs to secure 76 seats in the parliament in order to win the election. according to the current results, the Coalition has gained 74 seats, while the Labor Party has secured 66.

The parliamentary elections were held in Australia on July 2.
