"San Antonio is deployed as part of the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) to conduct maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the US 6th Fleet area of operations," the release stated.
The Wasp Amphibious Ready Group consists of the amphibious assault ship Wasp, amphibious dock landing ship Whidbey Island and the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, the release noted.
"[We] welcome the opportunity to work together to advance the combined interests of the United States and our regional partners to ensure global security and stability," San Antonio commanding officer Capt. Mike Patterson stated in the release.
The San Antonio is capable of integrating Naval and Marine forces in a joint, multi-mission platform capable of projecting power over land and sea, according to the release.
Also deployed with the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group are Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 22, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 264 and Assault Craft Unit 4.
