UNHCR Reports Record Number of Forcibly Displaced People Worldwide in 2015

According to a UNHCR report, UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) recorded the highest number of people forced to flee their home countries due to wars and persecution in 2015.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) recorded the highest number of people forced to flee their home countries due to wars and persecution in 2015, according to a UNHCR report published Monday.

"Wars and persecution have driven more people from their homes than at any time since UNHCR records began. It is the first time in the organization’s history that the threshold of 60 million has been crossed," the report read.

According to the report, 65.3 million people left their homes to flee conflicts and wars in 2015, including 21.3 million refugees which is the highest number recorded by UNHCR since the beginning of 1990s. Another 40.8 million people are internally displaced persons, the report read.

The majority of displaced people come from Syria (4.9 million), Afghanistan (2.7 million) and Somalia (1.2 million), the report read.

According to the report, the highest number of internally displaced people live in Colombia, Syria and Iraq (6.9, 6.6 and 4.4 million people, respectively).

European countries took in some 4.4 million people, including 2.5 million people who arrived from Turkey, the report read.
