US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs said that American citizens should not travel to Nagorno-Karabakh.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — American citizens should not travel to Nagorno-Karabakh amid escalation of tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs said in a Twitter message.

On Saturday, a new spate of violence broke out in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, as both sides traded accusations over violations of a ceasefire that has been in place since 1994.

The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh began in 1988, when the Armenian-dominated autonomous region sought to secede from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, before the latter proclaimed independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
