WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — More than 230 members of the Canadian armed forces have begun Operation NUNALIVUT 2016, designed to enhance Canada’s readiness and improve its military response to a possible conflict in the Arctic, the Canadian Department of National Defense said in a press release on Friday.

"Operation NUNALIVUT 2016 (Op NU 16) will take place in and around Resolute Bay and Alert, Nunavut from 1-22 April," the press release stated.

The Defense Department said the drills will consist of two activities, including ice dives, along with patrols and Arctic survival training on the sea ice, according to the release.

Canadian Joint Task Force (North) commands the operation, which involves personnel from the Royal Canadian Regiment and Navy.
