Recent terrorist attacks in Brussels can be regarded as a threat to civilization that demands increased international cooperation to be constrained.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Speaker of the Russian parliament's upper house, Valentina Matvienko, said on Wednesday that the recent terrorist attacks in Brussels represent a threat to civilization that demands increased international coordination.

"This is a real atrocity that cannot be justified. Our country, which is familiar with terrorism by more than hearsay, has taken the tragedy close to heart. We see that terrorism is becoming global. Not a single continent, not a single country can feel safe. This is a challenge to civilization, to the human right to life," Matvienko told the upper house.

Europe, the United States and the entire world should realize that a firm and decisive confrontation with terrorism requires a new level of international efforts that has been advocated by Russian President Vladimir Putin, she added.

On Tuesday, at least 31 people were killed and some 260 injured in two bomb blasts in Brussels' Zaventem airport and an explosion in the city’s subway. The Islamic State jihadist group, which is outlawed in many countries, including Russia and the United States, claimed responsibility for the attacks.
