The United State should eventually return Guantanamo Bay naval base to Cuba as it is situated on the Cuban territory and Havana wants it back, US Congressman Sam Farr told Sputnik.

Castro to Obama: Relations Won't Be Normal Until Guantanamo Returned
HAVANA (Sputnik) When asked whether Guantanamo should be returned to the island nation, Farr said, "Eventually. It’s Cuban soil."

The congessman reminded that the US-Cuban deal on Guantanamo Bay facility was an open-ended lease, which stipulated that both sides should agree for the lease to continue. While Havana "would love" the United States to leave Gitmo, Farr said he did not think it would happen, as Washington considered it to be a strategic place.

"I don’t think there is any move in the United States to abandon Guantanamo," the congressman added.

On March 10, US Senator Mark Kirk and 12 other lawmakers introduced a resolution to house newly captured extremist fighters of the Islamic State group, outlawed by both the Russian and US authorities, at the Guantanamo Bay detention center.

The lawmakers introduced the resolution despite President Barack Obama’s plan to close the detention center that houses suspected and actual terrorists. The resolution which was sent to Congress in February.
