The organization is described as an entity responsible for bringing "Syrian and foreign Al-Qaida in Iraq (QDe.115) and Asbat al-Ansar (QDe.007) fighters, along with other foreign Al-Qaida operatives, to join local elements in Syria to carry out terrorist and guerrilla operations there."
Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or Daesh), or Islamic State of Iraq, is listed as al-Qaeda in Iraq.
The UNSC 1267/1989/2253 Committee, pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015) with regard to ISIL (or Daesh in Arabic), al-Qaeda, and individuals, groups, undertakings and entities associated with these organizations, oversees the sanctions measures introduced by the Security Council.
