MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia and other countries should help to deliver humanitarian aid to areas in Syria that are difficult to access, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Sunday.
"I call on Russia and other states-participants of the ceasefire plan to use their influence to ensure general access of humanitarian aid to Syria and [to influence] the regime of President Bashar Assad and the Syrian opposition to reduce the intensity of hostilities," Steinmeier was quoted as saying by the German Deutsche Welle broadcaster.
Earlier in February, participants of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) adopted a final communique that called for humanitarian access to be provided swiftly to all besieged areas in Syria and set a one-week deadline for measures to be implemented to end the hostilities in the country.
The ISSG format currently involves Russia, the Arab League countries, the European Union and some of its member states, as well as China, Iran, Turkey, the United Nations and the United States.
