MUNICH (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — Georgia’s former president turned governor of a Ukrainian region, Mikheil Saakashvili, said he had no doubt that Georgia would eventually join NATO, in a comment to Sputnik on Friday.

At the 2008 Bucharest Summit, NATO allies agreed that Georgia could enter the US-led military bloc after it met all necessary requirements.

"I think Georgia will gradually join NATO. I have no doubt about this. It is a decision of Bucharest summit, and it is a matter of time," Saakashvili said on the margins of the Munich Security Conference in Germany.

The current governor of Odesa in southern Ukraine said Georgia's accession to NATO would be a "historic" moment. "That moment is coming sooner than later," he stated.

A NATO-Georgia Commission (NGC) was set up at the Bucharest meeting of NATO leaders to oversee the implementation of the country’s reforms. Georgia has also been providing support for NATO operations in Kosovo and Afghanistan.
