Russian, Iraqi Officials Discuss Military, Investment Issues in Baghdad

A Russian delegation of government officials, investment and military experts is in Iraq for a series of high-level working meetings, Iraqi Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmad Jamal told Sputnik on Wednesday.

CAIRO (Sputnik) – Several rounds of talks have been held at the Iraqi Foreign Ministry since Monday. They took place within the framework of the joint Iraqi-Russian Committee, headed by Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Jaafari and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin.

"The Russian delegation has been attending these meetings for three days. It is made up of over 100 people, including economy, military and investment experts," the Iraqi spokesman said.

Ahmad Jamal said negotiations were being held "thanks to the exceptional activity of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry."

Iqbal Abdul Hussein, a member of the Iraqi parliament's foreign relations committee and head of the Iraqi-Russian friendship committee, told RIA Novosti earlier on Wednesday that officials would discuss possible deliveries of Russian weapons to Iraq.

Iraq is fighting to defeat the Daesh terrorist group, which is outlawed in many countries including Russia. The two nations are also operating an intelligence sharing center based in Baghdad together with Iran and Syria.
