International Holocaust Remembrance Day
MOSCOW (Sputnik) Wednesday marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day, commemorating the millions of victims of Nazi Germany. The date coincides with the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by the Soviet Army in 1945.

"I want to thank the Red Army for what was done on January 27, 1945. It is important that we remember what happened," Heifetz said at a memorial evening in Moscow.

The Israeli ambassador added that it was necessary for the international community not to fail the so-called exam of keeping this memory and making sure not to repeat the grave incident.

Around 1.4 million are estimated to have been killed in Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest extermination camp network, 1.1 million of them Jews.
