Magnitude 6.2 Earthquake Strikes Off Moroccan Coast

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), a 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred on Monday in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Morocco.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The quake struck near Morocco at 5:22 a.m. local time (4:00 GMT). The epicenter was located 96.6 kilometers (60 miles) north-east of the city of Al Hoceima in the northern part of the country at the depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

Neither information about civilian damage nor casualty figures were immediately available.

According to the Richter scale, earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.0–6.9 are considered to be strong and can lead to casualties and cause damage to buildings and infrastructure up to hundreds of miles/kilometers from the epicenter.
