MOSCOW (Sputnik) Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday said there is a need to speak about cooperation and agreeing on positions in the energy industry, especially in the gas sphere.

“We have the necessity to speak about cooperation and agreeing positions in energy, especially in the gas sphere, after having talked about investment cooperation,” Putin said during a meeting with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in Moscow.

Earlier in the day, speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament Sergei Naryshkin said Russia hoped to strengthen bilateral coordination with Doha within the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).

GECF is an international governmental organization of the world’s leading gas producers. The member countries together account for some 67 percent of the world’s proven natural gas reserves.

The organization comprises Russia, Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.

Iraq, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Norway, Oman and Peru have an observer status at the organization.
