Sudan said that it is expelling Iran's ambassador from Khartoum in a move that comes after Saudi Arabia and Bahrain severed ties with the Islamic Republic, Russia's RIA Novosti news agency reported on Monday.

In a telephone conversation, the head of Sudan's Presidential Administration Tah Usman Al-Hussein notified the Deputy Crown Prince and Defense Minister of Saudi Arabia Muhammad bin Salman of the decision to expel the Iranian ambassador and recall a Sudanese envoy from Iran.

"During the conversation, Lt. Gen. Tah said that Sudan decided to expel the Iranian ambassador from the country with the rest of the diplomatic mission and withdraw its ambassador in Iran," the Saudi news agency SPA said.

According to the agency, the representative of Sudan stressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and condemned Iran's interference in the region.

Meanwhile, Iranian political scientist Seyed Hadi Afghahi has described the latest developments as a deliberate move by Saudi Arabia.

In an interview with Sputnik, he specifically pointed to how the authorities of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were extremely quick to break ties with Iran.

"One should also draw attention to the high speed at which the Western media spread this information. No doubt, we are witnessing a thorough  image and media campaign launched by Saudi Arabia against Iran, which has intensified in the past few days," Seyed Hadi Afghahi said.
