TTIP is a proposed free-trade deal between the European Union and the United States. The agreement which has been criticized for its unusual secrecy, is opposed by many Europeans who claim that the pact would undermine standards and regulations on environmental protection, health and safety, as well as workers’ rights, among other points.
According to the politician, out of four parties leading polls ahead of general election in Spain "the only one who has clearly opposed the TTIP is ours, and if we have the authority we will stall it."
Left-wing Podemos believes the deal is a "threat" to the sovereignty, democracy and welfare of the Spanish state since it "considers social and environmental regulations as barriers to trade," the party says in its electoral program.
"We understand the TTIP is a treaty that goes against the rights of workers, the environment," de Uralde reiterated.
A general election will be held in Spain December 20. According to a recent GESOP poll, Podemos could finish third with 20.4 percent of voters after the ruling People’s Party (25.8 percent) and the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (23.4 percent).
