MADRID (Sputnik) Isolating Russia in the international arena could precipitate catastrophic consequences, Enrique Santiago, one of the leaders of the leftist Popular Unity (UP) electoral alliance, told Sputnik.

"We think it is a catastrophic policy — seeking to isolate Russia in the international arena and exclude it from close relations with Western Europe," Santiago said.

Santiago, the "number three" in the UP electoral list for Madrid, stressed that good relations with Russia and other powers would make the world a place with much more diversity, and foster economic development.

"We believe that economic relations with Russia should be fostered and taken care of," Santiago added.

UP, headed by Alberto Garzon, is the only political force that has real chances of winning seats in the Spanish parliamentary elections on December 20 that openly opposes the country's NATO membership.

Terrorism can be defeated not by military actions but by respect for human rights and by addressing the root causes of it, Enrique Santiago said.

Santiago, the "number three" in the UP electoral list for Madrid, stressed that combating terrorism should not be carried out by such military alliances as NATO.

"We must address the causes of terrorism through smart policies, economic and social development," Santiago said.

He added that these anti-terrorist efforts should be carried out with "maximum respect for human rights."

"We defend the strict respect for human rights in all countries of the world as a way of ending any terrorist phenomenon," Santiago pointed out.
