WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Thursday, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomed the first 160 refugees that arrived in the country.
"We will be working in coming days to ensure, to do everything we possibly can, working on the ground in Jordan, and in Lebanon and in Turkey, to ensure the processing goes quickly, to ensure that planes are available," Immigration Minister McCallum stated.
McCallum previously said the arriving asylum seekers will be "relatively equally" distributed across Canada.
"I can tell you that we are still very much working to our target of 10,000 [refugees] by the end of the year and 25,000 by the end of February," McCallum noted.
Canada’s Ad Hoc Cabinet Committee on Refugees has previously stated that asylum seekers have to go through health and security checks prior to arriving in Canada.
