Footage circulated online of what appeared to be smoke bombs thrown at protesters, claimed to be tear gas deployed by law enforcement officials.

A Facebook user said he was attacked while walking home by Montreal police wearing riot gear.

"I was not engaging in civil disobedience of any kind," David Waddington wrote in a post shortly after the Montreal police tweeted the majority of protesters had dispersed.
The user wrote one of the officers struck him with a nightstick, kicked him and shouted for him to move in French.
Student protests against government budget cuts are held regularly in the city.
