TEHRAN (Sputnik) — Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei held a constructive conversation on bilateral relations and current international issues, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday.
"The conversation with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei lasted longer than planned, for over an hour and a half. The conversation was quite constructive," Peskov told reporters.
"The discussion largely focused on crises in the common region. First and foremost, the situation in Syria was discussed, there was an in-depth exchange of views. A common opinion was noted between Moscow and Tehran regarding the unacceptability of possible political solutions being dictated from the outside," according to the spokesman.
"According to Khamenei, the current level of cooperation clearly does not correspond to the potential of our two countries, and the supreme leader expressed hope that today's talk between Putin and Rouhani will bring results that will serve as a significant impetus to diversity our bilateral trade and economic relations".
Putin held a meeting with Khamenei on the sidelines of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in Tehran earlier in the day. The sides noted a large number of energy projects between Russia and Iran, Peskov said, though Khamenei believes that there is potential to develop relations further.
