The downing of the Russian airliner in Egypt shows that Russia stands high on the list of targets of terror attacks by Islamic State (IS, ISIL) militants, US President Barack Obama said Sunday.

MOSCOW, November 22 (Sputnik) —  "I do think that as a consequence of ISIL claiming responsibility for bringing down their plane, there is an increasing awareness… that ISIL poses a greater threat to them than anything else in the region," Obama told reporters on the margins of the Southeast Asia nations’ ASEAN summit, as cited by ABC News.

A Russian airliner came down in Egypt’s Sinai desert on October 31 while flying from the Egyptian resort of Sharm al-Sheikh to St. Petersburg. All 224 people on board died in the crash. The tragedy is the largest civil aviation disaster in Russian history.

The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the crash, saying it was a bomb explosion. Russian attack aircraft has been flying anti-IS bombing missions in Syria since September 30, targeting IS infrastructure.
