Upon emigrating to Canada, Syrian nationals fleeing war and violence in their country will contribute to the sustainable growth of the Canadian economy, the country's prime minister said Thursday.

MANILA (Sputnik) – According to Justin Trudeau, Canadian citizens have indicated to him that the nation should and can do more to help Syrian refugees.

"There is no question there is a tremendous contribution to Canada by welcoming in people who want nothing more than to build better life for themselves their families, community… This is both a good thing to do for the economy and prosperity and a good thing for stability of the planet," he stated during the APEC summit in the Philippines.

Trudeau pledged during his recent election campaign to resettle 25,000 refugees currently residing in camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey by the year-end.

Commenting on the expense of accepting asylum seekers, the prime minister said that Ottawa would provide details on the costs of this plan in the near future.

Trudeau’s proposal has caused some in the nation to be concerned, in the aftermath of recent terror attacks in Paris that killed 129 and injured over 350.

Over half of Canadians, 54 percent, either moderately or strongly oppose his resettlement plan, an Angus Reid Institute poll revealed on Wednesday.
