ANTALYA (Sputnik) —Russian President Vladimir Putin urged the international community on Sunday to work closer together to tackle terrorism, at an informal BRICS summit in Antalya, Turkey, ahead of the meeting of the G20 leaders.
"We realize all too well that only the unified effort of the entire international community can help tackle the threat of terrorism and assist millions of people left homeless [by conflicts]," Putin said at the BRICS meeting.
The meeting of the BRICS club of emerging economies under Russian presidency kicked off in Antalya on Sunday. Brazilian, Russian, Indian, Chinese and South African leaders are attending.
Speaking on Friday’s terrorist attack in Paris, Putin said that, "We offer our condolences to the people [of France]. We have always called for working together to fight the threat of terrorism more efficiently."
He added that anti-terror operations should be in line with the UN Charter and international norms, and called to respect sovereignty of affected countries.
Russia has been carrying out precision airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria since late September at a request of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
