The spokesman said British Prime Minister David Cameron talked with Russian President Vladimir Putin last Thursday, five days after Kogalymavia flight 9268 crashed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. All 224 people on board the Airbus A321 died in the accident. The flight left Sharm El-Sheikh resort, en route to St. Petersburg, early Saturday, October 31.
"President Putin explained his understanding for our concern for the safety of British citizens," the spokesman stressed.
British media reported Sunday that the leader of an Egyptian Islamic State (IS) jihadist group affiliate known as Sinai Province claimed responsibility for the A321 crash in an audio recording. Abu Osama Masri’s message was reportedly carried on Wednesday by a Twitter account linked to Sinai Province, which claimed affiliation to IS last November.
Senior US intelligence officials have told local media they are "99.9 percent certain" that the crash was caused by a bomb smuggled on board the plane. The tragedy is the largest civil aviation disaster in Russian history.
