WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On August 2, UN member states finalized the agenda on combating poverty and hunger by 2030.

The new document determines 17 goals of sustainable development, including measures to ensure a healthy lifestyle, gender equality, consistent access to energy, general increase of living standards, job creation, as well as climate change control.

“International financial agencies should care for the sustainable development of countries and should ensure that they are not subjective to oppressive lending systems, which far from promoting progress subject people to mechanisms which generate greater poverty, exclusion and dependence,” the pontiff said.

On September 1, the UN General Assembly adopted a draft of a post-2015 development agenda, which is set to come into force on January 1, 2016, and replace the current Millennium Development Goals.
