MOSCOW (Sputnik), Yulia Shamporova In late June, the European Union extended the sanctions imposed against Russia in 2014 over its alleged involvement in the Ukraine conflict. In response, Moscow prolonged an embargo on certain food products from the countries that imposed the restrictions, which has been in place since August 2014.

"These sanctions have been imposed against the will of most of the European countries’ leaders…It’s done for one purpose: to stop any alliance with Russia and to advantage of the United States," Schaffhauser said.

The lawmaker added that anti-Russia sanctions could "unfortunately" exist only with the help of the institutions of the European Union.

Over the past year and a half, the United States, the European Union and their allies have imposed several rounds of sanctions against Russia over the Ukrainian crisis. Moscow has firmly denied any involvement in the conflict.
