BALI (Sputnik) British Prime Minister David Cameron said Tuesday that he agreed with Indonesian President Joko Widodo's proposals to jointly counter extremism, in particular, the Islamic State (ISIL) militant group.

Cameron is currently on a visit to Indonesia which is due to finish on Tuesday.

"We have agreed to step up our joint efforts both to tackle the terrorist threat and to counter the extremist narrative," the UK prime minister was quoted as saying by the BBC.

IS is a "shared enemy" and, by uniting together, the two countries could better protect themselves from this "evil threat," Cameron said.

He added that his country could learn from Jakarta’s approach to tackling terrorism, in particular, through an exchange program between religious and community leaders aimed at fostering better understanding between the two countries.

Cameron promised to help Widodo increase anti-terrorism security in the country by providing local Indonesian police with counter-terrorism training and facilitating security improvements in major airports in Bali and Jakarta.

The two leaders have also discussed economic cooperation. Widodo welcomed the growing UK investment in his country, which increased by 34 percent last year, and urged the United Kingdom to diversify its business activities in Indonesia by investing more in infrastructure.

Last week, Cameron delivered a keynote speech on tackling extremism and promised to counter extremist ideology and stymie the process of radicalization. He also empowered the communications watchdog Ofcom to pursue foreign media outlets that broadcast radicalized messages.

Islamic State is a Sunni militant group in control of large areas of Syria and Iraq. The group is notorious for its brutality and many human rights violations, as well as for recruiting young people from all over the world via social networks.

At least 20,000 foreign fighters from across the globe have traveled to Syria and Iraq to join Islamic State, according to US intelligence.
