According to preliminary information, a cluster bomb exploded in front of a cafe in the cultural center of Suruc.

An explosion hit the Turkish city of Suruc on the border with Syria on Monday, leaving 28 people dead and about 100 injured.

The blast occurred at Amara cultural center while a political group was giving a statement to the press on the reconstruction of the Syrian city of Kobani, the scene of fierce battles between Kurdish groups and the Islamic State.

There is speculation that the blast was caused by a 18-year-old female suicide bomber from the Islamic State group.

The Turkish Interior Ministry said on Monday the blast was a "terrorist attack".

"We call on everyone to stand together and remain calm in the face of this terrorist attack which targets the unity of our country," the ministry said in a written statement.

Suruc is the largest Turkish camp for refugees from the war-torn Syria.
