"Britain is now committed to meeting a NATO 2 percent [of the country's GDP] defense spending target all way through this decade, we have already carried out more airstrikes in Iraq than anyone else other than the United States, but I want us to step up and do more, what I call a full spectrum response," Cameron said on NBC News' Meet the Press.

The ISIL, which has seized large areas in Iraq and Syria, has been reported to recruit thousands of westerners. The group’s propaganda efforts on social networking websites especially target young people.

In early June, Defense Secretary Michael Fallon told lawmakers that they should consider launching similar airstrikes in Syria.
