MOSCOW (Sputnik) The Vatican will open a trial on July 11 against its former envoy to the Dominican Republic on charges of sexual abuse and possession of child pornography, according to Monday media reports.

"Vatican trial opens July 11 for former archbishop Jozef Wesolowski on sexual abuse & possessing child pornography," the Catholic News Service said on Twitter.

Wesolowski, 66, is a Polish-born Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church, who served as papal envoy to the Dominican Republic between 2008 —2013.

In 2013, he was recalled from the Caribbean country to the Vatican after the Dominican authorities pursued allegations of child abuse against him.

In June 2014, Wesolowski was defrocked by the Vatican after a Church tribunal convicted him of sexual abuse.

The former papal representative has been under house arrest arrest in the Vatican since September 2014.
