MOSCOW (Sputnik) Attacks on journalists should be treated as seriously as war crimes, an adviser to Spain's representative to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) suggested on Monday.

Jorge Espinosa made the proposal at a Conference on Journalists' Safety, Media Freedom and Pluralism in Times of Conflict that is taking place in the Austrian city of Vienna on June 15 and 16. He urged all the conference participants to support the initiative.

The main objective of the conference is to examine and improve the safety of journalists who work in conflict zones.

The conference participants are expected to develop recommendations to improve reporter safety.
