MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The US public respect Soviet victims of the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War, US Ambassador to Russia John Tefft said on Thursday.
The Great Patriotic War refers to the Soviet Union's fight against Nazi Germany between 1941 and 1945. The end of the Great Patriotic War coincides with the end of the WWII in Europe.
“American people deeply respect victims that the Soviet Union sacrificed during the Great Patriotic War. As President Kennedy said, ‘no nation in the history of battle ever suffered more than the Soviet Union suffered in the course of the Second World War,’” Tefft said during a live chat on US Embassy Facebook page.
On May 9, Russia and other former Soviet states will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany. Some 27 heads of state and government are expected to visit Moscow to participate in the celebrations.
