MOSCOW, January 15 (Sputnik) — The authorities of Russia’s predominantly Muslim republic of Chechnya said that they plan to respond in kind to the publication of cartoons of Prophet Muhammad in the French magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Alvi Karimov, press secretary of Chechen head of state Ramzan Kadyrov, said that on January 19, hundreds of thousands of people will take part in a protest rally in the Chechen capital Grozny in connection with "the publication of the Western media," Russia’s Kommersant daily reported on Thursday.

The rally, which was initiated by local clergy and is due to begin at 10:00 local time in central Grozny, will be attended by an array of prominent clerics from all across Russia, according to Karimov. He declined to say whether Ramzan Kadyrov will take part in the event.

Meanwhile, local clergy have said that they condemn any action "directly or indirectly insulting the Messenger of Allah."

At least 12 people were killed in Paris on January 7, when two men opened fire in the offices of the magazine Charlie Hebdo, in revenge for the paper's publication of satirical images of the Prophet Muhammad in the past.
