UK Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday called Ebola the risk number one and urged European countries to take action in West Africa.

BRUSSELS, October 23 (RIA Novosti) – UK Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday called Ebola the risk number one and urged European countries to take action in West Africa.

"Risk number one is obviously the crisis of Ebola and it's very important we take action at source, in West Africa," Cameron told reporters arriving at the EU summit in Brussels.

He said that the United Kingdom has been "leading the way in terms of Sierra Leone", pledging over 125 million pounds ($200 million) and sending military and other forces to the country to help.

"But we need other European countries to do more," the UK prime minister added.

The 125 million pounds are to support 700 treatment beds to help up to 8,800 patients over the next six months.

On October 21, about a hundred soldiers from the Royal Army Medical Corps were to leave for Sierra Leone to help fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, according to the UK Department for International Development. Overall, 750 military personnel is expected to be deployed to assist the UK's mission.

In September, the UK and Sierra Leone called on the international community to contribute to the mission of fighting Ebola. At the request of Sierra Leone, Britain was coordinating the international mission in the West African country to contain and defeat the virus.

According to the World Health Organization data, 4,877 people have died from the Ebola virus since the beginning of its current outbreak in February, with 9,936 confirmed, probable and suspected cases.
