Ban Ki-moon ‘Strongly Condemns’ Attack on UN Peacekeepers in Darfur, Sudan

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon “strongly condemns” the attack in Darfur, western Sudan on Thursday which resulted in death of three UN peacekeepers, UN said in a statement.

UNITED NATIONS, October 17 (RIA Novosti) - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon “strongly condemns” the attack in Darfur, western Sudan on Thursday which resulted in death of three UN peacekeepers, UN said in a statement.

According to the statement released on Thursday, UN Secretary General “strongly condemns today’s attack on the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur resulting in the killing of two Ethiopian peacekeepers near Korma, North Darfur, while they were guarding a water borehole in the area.” The statement added that a third peacekeeper, who was wounded, later succumbed to his injuries.

UN Secretary General also conveyed his sincere condolences “to the families of the fallen peacekeepers and to the Government of Ethiopia.” Ban Ki-moon emphasized that “attacks on UN peacekeepers are unacceptable and constitute a serious violation of international law.”

According to the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), three UN peacekeepers were attacked by a group of unidentified armed men on Thursday. This incident brought the number of peacekeepers who have been killed in Darfur to 61 since the inception of the Mission in 2007.
