MOSCOW, October 15 (RIA Novosti) - British Prime Minister David Cameron has promised Wednesday to consider awarding Alan Henning, who was executed by the Islamic State (IS) in October, with a national honor.

"I will look very carefully at the suggestion you make because I think you're absolutely right that Alan Henning was a hero. He went to serve others, he went with no thought of his own safety, but it was about helping other people in their time of need," Cameron said during Prime Minister's Questions.

"He was an entirely innocent man and the fact he was murdered in such a brutal fashion demonstrates the dreadfulness of the people that we are dealing with in ISIL," the prime minister added. "I know that people in Eccles and in Salford miss him greatly. I spoke to his wife and the family have been incredibly brave. You make a very good suggestion which I will take away and look at."

The Islamic State released a video on October 3 showing the beheading of British citizen Alan Henning, an aid volunteer from British town Eccles, who was taken captive by IS on December 26 after crossing the Turkish border into Syria. The jihadists explain they are killing hostages in retaliation to the US-led air strikes targeting IS militants.

The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the group extended its attacks to northern and western Iraq, declaring a caliphate on the territories it had seized.

In August, the United States started launching airstrikes against IS positions in Iraq. In September, attacks by the United States and its allies were extended to Syria.
