Independence supporters from eastern Ukraine and the Kiev government have conducted a prisoner exchange that presupposed handing over 14 prisoners from each side in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, a representative from the Donetsk People's Republic committee on refugees and prisoners of war told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

DONETSK, October 14 (RIA Novosti) – Independence supporters from eastern Ukraine and the Kiev government have conducted a prisoner exchange that presupposed handing over 14 prisoners from each side in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, a representative from the Donetsk People's Republic committee on refugees and prisoners of war told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

"The exchange took place in the Luhansk People's Republic. The swap was carried out in a '14 for 14' format, although at the last moment we found out that the Ukrainian side would only give us 13 people," the committee said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that the independence supporters had returned 14 Ukrainians.

In early October, the committee reported that in total independence supporters had handed over 217 Ukrainian personnel so far, while Kiev authorities had liberated 232 people.

On September 5, the opposing sides agreed to a ceasefire as a result of a Contact Group meeting in the Belarusian capital of Minsk. They agreed to exchange all prisoners and open humanitarian corridors.
