MOSCOW, October 12 (RIA Novosti) - Typhoon Vongfong has hit the Japanese island of Okinawa, bringing heavy rains and strong winds, and causing flight cancellations and power cuts to more than 20,000 homes, the BBC reported Sunday.

Vongfong could bring high waves, storm surges, floods and landslides, officials were cited as saying by the BBC.

The typhoon is reportedly carrying winds of up to 235 kph (146 mph) but its advance is slow.

The typhoon is currently headed north and is expected to make landfall on Kyushu island on Monday. At least 14 people are said to have been injured by the strong winds.

Japan was previously hit by typhoon Phanfone, which caused Japanese authorities to ask about one million people to evacuate as the typhoon approached central Japan. At least one US Air Force member was killed, with 10 people injured and three missing.
