MOSCOW, October 8 (RIA Novosti) – A major geological fault line, capable of generating earthquakes of up to 6.5 magnitude, has been found in Wellington, the Guardian reported on Wednesday.
The fault line is believed to be between 10km and 15km in length, the Guardian said.
A team of scientists from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) said at least two major earthquakes have occurred on the fault within the last 10,000 years, ABC News report.
The fault’s discovery has created worried talks in the country, with some arguing the capital should be moved elsewhere, as the fault line runs through the city’s harbor between Westpac Stadium and Oriental Bay, as well as touching upon a several suburbs, the Guardian said.
“From time to time people say the capital should be elsewhere, but I think that’s fanciful. The capital isn’t going anywhere”, said John Key, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, as quoted by the Guardian.
