WASHINGTON, October 8 (RIA Novosti) - Nobody was hurt in Tuesday's derailment incident in the central Canadian province of Saskatchewan, Jim Feeny, a spokesperson for Canadian National Railway (CN), told RIA Novosti.

"There are no injuries associated with this incident, nobody is hurt," Feeny said on Tuesday.

"The 100-car train was headed west bound. Twenty six cars derailed, and two cars spilt petroleum distillate onto the ground and caught fire, and that was the source of the fire and the smoke," the spokesman explained the derailment.

Feeny stressed that the emphasis right now is to extinguish the fire and "return things to normal."

"CN and first emergency responders are on site, and will be working to extinguish the fire," he said, noting that the authorities evacuated a number of people from the immediate area.

Earlier, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada stated on its website it was deploying a team of investigators to the site of a derailment.

The train, reportedly transporting hazardous chemicals, including hydrochloric acid or caustic soda, went off rails on Tuesday at 10:40 a.m. local time (14:40 GMT) near the city of Wadena, catching fire, which resulted in plumes of toxic smoke at the site of the crash.
