MOSCOW, October 6 (RIA Novosti) - Authorities in self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics in eastern Ukraine are considering the possibility of postponing the upcoming elections until November 9, local officials announced Monday.

Both regions have previously set elections of regional leaders and legislative bodies for November 2, while the rest of Ukraine is holding a snap parliamentary election to the Verkhovna Rada on October 26.

Authorities in Donetsk and Luhansk regions said Monday they would need an extra week to prepare for elections and make repairs to polling stations damaged in armed clashes between independence supporters and Kiev-led forces.

"We don't have enough time to get everything ready for the elections – the registration and so forth," Andrei Purgin, the prime minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), told RIA Novosti on Monday, adding that the elections are likely to be rescheduled.

The spokesperson for the Central Electoral Commission of Luhansk also told RIA Novosti that the Commission had asked the People's Council of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic to postpone the elections until November 9.

Kiev authorities and independence supporters aligned positions on a ceasefire and a number of issues including the status of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions on September 5 in the capital of Belarus, Minsk, through the mediation of Russia and Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

Following the Minsk protocol, Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, approved a law, granting special status to parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions on September 16. The law introduces self-administration and guarantees the right to use Russian language.

Later in September, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said that the Kiev government will recognize the local elections in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region only if the vote meets international standards and is monitored by observers.
