UNITED NATIONS, October 3 (RIA Novosti) - The UN Development Program's Regional Director for Asia Haoliang Xu and the head of the UN Office for the Humanitarian Affairs John Ging stressed the need for eradication of poverty in Myanmar on Friday.

"We need to scale up poverty eradication across Rakhine State, with a particular focus on development solutions which promote peaceful co-existence. Stability and peace can be achieved only when the needs of all communities are met," Xu told the press.

Director of Operations at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs John Ging was travelling with Xu to Myanmar.

Ging argued that the lasting peace in Myanmar is impossible without resolving "citizenship crisis" in Rakhine.

"This is a humanitarian crisis, which has the potential to be resolved in a way which will stand as an international success story. We need to engage to ensure that this crucial opportunity is not missed," the UN executive said.

Clashes between the Buddhist majority and the Muslim Rohingya minority in the Rakhine State in 2012, led to the displacement of around 140,000 people, according to the UN. The Myanmar government denies citizenship to the Rohingya, treating them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
