MOSCOW, September 30 (RIA Novosti) - Dubai police are planning to equip the police offers with Google Glass, in a bid to become the most technology-savvy force by 2018, al-Arabiya reports.
Local police will also employ face recognition technology, developed in Dubai, linked with a database of known offenders, according to the Smart Services Department. “Once the glass recognizes the suspect based on a face print, it will give an alert to the officer wearing it,” Colonel Khalid Nasser al-Razooqi, director general of the department, said, as quoted by the 7 Days newspaper.
“Most likely we will start using the glasses for catching criminals by the beginning of next year,” he added. Dubai police are already using a limited number of the wearable computerized devices to identify traffic violators and stolen cars.
Police departments all over the United States have tested the new wearable since the beginning of 2014. “We are looking to see how it could work and that doesn't mean it will be used for patrol,” said Sgt. Dan Gomez, who oversees the Tactical Technology Section of the Los Angeles Police Department, as quoted by USA Today. “It could be used for other purposes but it's hard to say what we would do without having it,” he stressed.
Google Glass, which costs $1,500 a pair, can record video, take photos and is capable of running apps.
